Was Alice in Chains a grunge band? Or maybe something more.....

I am really happy to see Jerry out there making great music. When someone has as much talent as Jerry has, you dont just go away. I have Dedradation Trip and it is really good. Some of the songs sound like Layne is back with us. Its really amazing. Jerry has been with Layne for a long while and he is able to produce a sound that is so close to Layne. Everyone always called Alice in Chains a grunge band but i never actually believed that. Bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam were good but their vocal didnt compete with Alice in Chains. Another grunge band that had a good vocal sound was Soundgarden. They had the vocals also. If anyone agrees with this please comment!

We've definitely had this discussion on the AiC forum. It's a really interesting question because everything from Seattle at that time was called grunge and what the hell is grunge? When you're talking about bands with such different sounds, how can you categorize them as all one genre? Anyway, if you're looking for ppl to talk about this with I'd suggest the AiC forum (since it is an AiC question).

Yeah, grunge is such a misnomer for the music that came out of Seattle in that time period. To me, it was some media-generated label to somehow identify the music, but it was more of a look or attitude than anything to do with music, IMHO.

Yeah i have listined to a lot of music that is what i considered grunge. Nirvana was one of the more "grungie" sounding bands. They wailed a lot and Cobain had a really gravel sounding voice. I like it but if i wanted harmony and great vocals i would listin to Alice in Chains. They where to good at singing and lyric writing wise to be  grunge band.

Yes it was a terrible shame to lose such a great guitarist at a younge age. He was an insperation to many blues guitarist. I have a couple of his concerts and i love to hear him play. In Memphis you can buy pick guards with the SRV letters on it. The only thind wrong is if the guard dosent fit the guitar. I have a strat and i was looking at the design and it was a little different from mine. Maybe it would fit but u may need to get the same year model guitar as his. I really want one so next time im in Memphis i will try to get one. I think they where like 30 to about 50 bucks. Not bad. I have seen higher prices.

I agree with you about how Jerry can make his voice sound similar to Layne's in DT. He amazes us with his own range of vocals and how he layers them. You can see how Layne's voice could play so well with what was in Jerry's head creativity-and sound-wise. Layne's range and talent was even more diverse in strong ways and it complimented Jerry's more breathy and every-man type vocals. This album makes me imagine Jerry would miss having Layne's voice as an option to work with. Yet, he has pulled off a very complete album, where a song might be remniscent of Layne's voice, but still carries us along and through this trip without him... also agree on your evals of the other bands-

I wouldn't call AiC a grunge band. Like said everything from Seattle in that period (end of 80's ['86-'92] - beginning of 90's) was called grunge. But like also said it was more of a look, an attitude, the clothes people weared. Boots, ripped jeans, greasy (long) hair, flannel shirts. That is grunge. Grunge is an issue in music but also in fashion. AiC sounds grunge in their 80's demos: Social Parasite, Queen of the rodeo, Killing yourself, Chemical Addiction, King of the kats. Facelift album is more hard rock to me. The "real" grunge band to me is offcourse Nirvana and mother love bone! Check it out it's awesome
