    31/32?

Anyone have a quote from Jerry as to what's up with the song title 31/32?

It's nothing official, but 31/32 is (duh) the end of the Trip... partially self-biographical but I honestly think the song has more to do with his family than with Layne. That is ONLY my opinion though.

    my thoughts exactly..
    like when he says:
Age adult, mother gone, friends with dad, don't really talk

amongst other things in the song...
'Eat of the apple so young... I'm crawling back to start...'

    Re: 31/32?

the title 31/32 could have many different possible meanings, don't quote any of these as facts, but 31 to 32 could be the progression of age, but i think because of the way it is written 31/32, in fraction form, it could mean 31 out of 32, or saying that he didn't quite get all the way, or it is incomplete, once again this is just my opinion, but that's what i gather from the lyrics, this is my favorite song on this disc...this is my first post, but hopefully it has some significance to someone, or i'm wrong, but whatever, lots of songs are up to interpretation

No one really knows what that title is about. It was also rumored that it was the 31st song of 32 song orignally written for D-Trip

    Re: 31/32?

When he wrote it, he was 32, and Layne was 31. It's a reflection of their lives I think....

    Re: 31/32?

There really isn't any connection to Layne in this song. It's Jerry recapping his life. Futuregod's explainations are probably the closest. It could be the age progression, but I kind of doubt it, because it is very much alone the style of D-trip, and Jerry would have been older then 31-32 at the time it was written. I think the 31/32 fraction is the more likely situation. Meaning he has accomplished all kinds of great things, done pretty much everything you could ever dream about, yet there is a little something missing.

    Re: 31/32?

I've always thought it was the number of the hotel room....and the fraction thing was for ambiguity....

    just a thought.....

when i heard this song i thought 31/32 stood for the time in his life described in the song between the ages of 31-32...this is just my opinion though...

Me too. You do actually get double rooms with numbers like this in some hotels.

    But I don't know.

    Re: 31/32?

I kind of agree with the family angle. Gut-shot defender, shellshocked commander make me think this is about his dad or something. The style of this song makes me think more of Boggy Depot than D-trip and it could have been written in '98, which might jibe with the 31/32 age reference. Jerry was touring those songs in 2001, right? I don't know, maybe it was a leftover from the BD sessions, or maybe not. Maybe it's the fraction idea, since the song has kind of a taking-stock/reflective vibe to it.
