Yeah dude, it took me a good two months to learn and memorize Perpetual Burn. It really isn't all that hard if you have all the chops to play it. It took me a long time to get mine there, but there is a Hal Leonard book called Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar by Troy Stetina (The dude with the shred column in Guitar One) that helped me a ton, and I strongy recommend that book to everyone because it shows great techniques on how to alternate pick, sweep, use scales, improv, and good tips for what to practice, and how to practice effectively.

yeah man thats impressive. Jason becker is the greatest solo guitar player of all time in my opinion. That album itself is class, but top marks for being able to play perpetual burn

Re: SONGS TO PLAY AT GUITAR CENTER OR WHEREVER

I'm starting guitar lessons with a different teacher in 3 weeks. he did the conservatory, he plays like 7 instruments, and he's gonna show me all the techniques I want, so I'm gonna start off with http://youtube.com/watch?v=rXd3xpyK72k this version of Nutshell, which I really like, and it has some fast parts in it. If I can play this perfectly, I'll really be satisfied, I don't feel the need to be able to play Becker, cause I prefer solo's like Jerry's, and those of Adam Jones. that's the style I like to play.

Here's me playing them bones, and yes, I know the sound sucks, but I was playing a crummy old amp, and I hit my wah too soon, oh and the singer can't really sing too well . a good thing this isn't my regular band :)

    NO STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN!

DENIED! LOL sorry I have a soft spot for Wayne's World Stick out tongue
But to put in my 2 cents, I usually play a little of everything:

Metallica- Nothing Else Matters, Fade To Black
Alice In Chains- Dont' Follow, Down In A Hole, Brother, Nutshell, It Ain't Like That
Stone Temple Pilots- Plush, Sex Type Thing, Interstate Love Song

and a bunch of other things I throw in there like a few scales, bends and such...

Re: SONGS TO PLAY AT GUITAR CENTER OR WHEREVER

First off two things usually happen at Guitar Center.  Either I get some Emo geek that won't leave me alone or I get ignored-- which is cool.  I just hate the checkpoint at the border attitude they give you when you first walk in.  If they annoy me, I play nonstop what ever song is most popular--my favorite was two years ago, the 12th fret scale from "Pieces" by Slash of Velvet Revolver, sounds nice once or twice but 50 times in a row....I do that.  I also do the Sweet Child o Mine solo that way too.   Emo kids hate guitar solos.

When I get ignored or watched like I am going to steal them blind, I start handling all the expensive guitars.  When a salesman gets close, I exhale loudly, pull out a wad of cash and say, "Damnit guess I have to go to Sam Ash where I can get some service" and I storm out the door.  Sam Ash sucks more than Guitar Center, FYI.

I am a fan of the local guitar store with a guy that knows guitars, not selling snowboards last week.  They are also the guys you can't bullsh*t with some piecemeal guitar solos, either, you find some real good players in the local guitar stores.  Furthermore, you might pay a bit more but they will probably properly set up your guitar for you, not like the FUBAR'D Chinese made Ephipones flying out the doors at Sam Ash.

the people at our guitar center are actually pretty nice.

as for what to play,  usually I just piss around. 80% of the time that's what I do anyway.
