do you first mix your laquer with a pigment for the first 4 coats, and then finish it with the same laquer but without the pigment in it?

    Hey,

I've been trying to track you down.  I was a few seconds to late at the end of that auction - I was planning on buying and refinishing that guitar myself LOL.  I saw your progress on the G&L forum, really impressive so far.

I dig Rampages, have two but in my opinion Superhawks are the way to go if you can find them.  I'm always looking for them but they don't turn up to often and they are either beat to complete shit or way too expensive.  I bought this one for about $450.00 last year and with a $55.00 set up and a new bridge pickup it's just the bomb for a guitar under $600.00.

So for your color, do you want the Olympic White or are you going for the faded cream like JC's Blue Dress Rampage?  I don't know much about do-it-yourself painting but if you want to have it done professionally for about half the price take it to an autobody shop and let them shoot it.  They can mix the color as close as you want it.  Even if you do decide to paint it yourself then at least buy the paint from them.  High quality, good color mix and relativly inexpensive.  Another plus to doing it yourself is after you get the initial color coats on you can then lay on some cool graphics cut right out of a magazine if you wanted and seal them on with the clear coats.  Depending on what clar coat you use you can actually make th guitar look more aged if it has an amber tint to it.  Got to a furniture restoration place and talk about clear coat options.  Also talk to them about wet sanding as ou go.

Email me or hit my Myspace and keep me post on your progress.  Very cool project, gonna be a sweet axe when you're finished.

I mailed and commented a few times on your previous myspace.

for the paint, I'm going to holland, the official G&L repairman is located there. he will provide me the paint. it's called Artic White then. good to know.

what caps do I need, 0.022 or 0.047?  I thinks that's the only thing I need to know. and how to file my frets. the first four have little dents in them

Re: repainting a guitar, help me out

i have refinished quite a few guitars, a G&L rampage and i made a replica of van halen's first guitar. i dont go nuts trying to get a "factory finish" but i think i do pretty good work. all i suggest is sanding through the clear coat and down to the wood...get all the paint off of there. make sure its nice and smooth. sand out any drips runs in between coats. finish off the guitar with lacquer if you want a factory style finish but keep in mind that lacquer can take months to fully cure. i offer this not as professional advice but as a guide since i have had great results just doing it with such a simply method....i'll try and post i pic of one ive done. good luck to you.

also, you DO NOT need to buy parts for refinishing from stew mac. i go to home depot and get a can of spray paint for 4 dollars and different grits of sand paper for a few bucks. i know stew mac sells a refinishing kit but i dont think you need it. i'm gonna post a pic later to show the job i did for like 10 dollars.

Re: repainting a guitar, help me out

I have seen in my guitar world magazines in the back where there are adds that there is a set you can order that teaches you how to paint and rebuild your own guitar. It wasnt very expensive and it looked like a great deal. If iwhere redoing my guitar i would check that add out.
